Science
£ód¼'s immense scientific potential exerts direct influence on science
development in the whole of the region and its cooperation with the rest of the
country and the world.
The local centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences, which carries out
intensive research in the area of natural sciences and the arts, maintains
self-contained research institutes. These comprise: the Molecular and
Macromolecular Research Centre, the Biogenic Amines Department, and the
Microbiology and Virology Centre.
Across the region there are being established further local de-partments of
the Polish Academy of Sciences' Institutes.
Research is also carried out by the University of £ód¼, the Technical
University of £ód¼, and the Medical University.
The University and the Technical University belong to a group of Poland's
largest universities. Apart from the aforementioned science and research
institutions, other strong academic and research establishments in the region
are: the Mazovia Higher School of Humanities and Pedagogy in £owicz, the Higher
School of Commerce in Zgierz, the Higher School of Humanities and Economics, and
the Social Higher School of Business and Management in £ód¼. In 2002, the
Medical Academy and the Defence Medical Academy combined to form the Medical
University.
£ód¼'s research centres enjoy good reputation in the world. The research in
chemistry, physics, and polymer technology and its uses for the production of
plastics and synthetic fibres is on the top, world-class level.
Also, the region's capital is an important international research cooperation
centre. £ód¼ is the seat of the European Studies Centre, the Alliance Francaise
Centre, the British Council. Also present are schools of foreign languages,
which award international certificates. The achievements of the most renowned
scientists, researchers, not infrequently pioneers in rare specialities, in the
first place serve the development of the whole region, and bring pride and glory
to the region's capital.
The outcome of a joint effort of the scientists, community, the
entrepreneurial circles, and the local government is the initiative to build a
Regional Park of Science and Technology in £ód¼. The Park will put to practical
use the products of the work carried out by the local research and academic
centres, and help to transfer technologies for the needs of the national
industry.
The £ód¼ agglomeration is also an important academic centre. Nearly 100
thousand students study at 20 colleges and universities, including 6 state
universities. This puts the region of £ód¼ at the forefront of the cities with
the highest intellectual potential.
Apart from the University, studies in the arts and art schools are
represented by the Music Academy, the Academy of Fine Arts, and the State Higher
School of Film, Television and Theatre, with the latter being credited for the
world-famous Polish school of film.
