Environment conservation

In order to protect the water resources of the Łódź province, few complex projects that are aimed both at stopping the process of degeneration as well as the adaptation of the green areas for recreation and tourism purposes are being worked out.

The "Pilica Programme" concerning the conservation of water in the basin in Sulejów, in the upper course of the Pilica river and its main tributaries- its aim is to achieve 1st Class cleanliness in the basin in Sulejów, which is the main source of drinking water for the Łódź population. The "Warta Programme" involving the Jeziorsko Basin, Warta river and its tributaries- it allows to create a balanced economic development of the region, and The "Bzura Programme" which principles and objectives are similar to the above mentioned programmes.

As a result of carrying out these programmes, a human friendly area, with a high recreational and natural value, and appropriate condition for the conservation of natural resources and also for developing tourism in the region will come into existence.

A research programme called: "A general method of plasma arch for the liquation of toxic wastes, together with the simultaneous creation of high quality building materials" was attached to the 5th Framework Programme of the European Union and after receiving a positive opinion- it was sanctioned for co-financing by the EU. The aim of the project is to work out the technology, which implementation will allow for the adaptation of the existing plants for the destruction of wastes in the zero emission objects, and also make possible the utilisation of the most dangerous and toxic wastes.

On the other hand, in order to reduce the amount of pollution from the high chimneys, ecologic heating agents are used and gradually modern absorption equipment is being introduced. The energy that can be regenerated- geothermal water, air etc. is used in a wider range.

Advanced works connected with the use of geothermal energy is already on the way in Uniejów, and further groundwork and preparatory survey in this issue were carried out in Poddębice, Skierniewice and Ozorków. The resources of geothermal waters occurring in the northern part of the province are used as supply an energetic element in the communal and local economy as well as in the health service.

On the other hand, the potential areas for the location of wind power stations on the territory of the province are in the region of the "Bełchatów" coal mine and in the region of Rawa Mazowiecka.

In the Łódź region, activities involving the use of biogas, emitted as a result of the stored organic wastes and the conversion of the raw material for the purpose of raising energy were carried out. An installation of this type has already been launched in the storage yard in Doły Brzeskie. Preparatory jobs for the launching of a similar installation are also continuing on the area of the former dumping ground in Nowosolna. Some studies and research jobs connected with the production of the so-called "bio-fuel" which is derived from rape are being carried out in the northern part of the province. The steps taken are aimed at the launching of a production centre for bio- fuel in Kutno. The ecologic policy of the province estimates an increase of the regenerated sources of energy in its energetic balance. The accomplishment of this objective, will allow for a quick realisation of the strategy for the sustainable development of the province.
